White space and a gas station test

Solid comprehensive stories and quality photos are at the heart of a strong community newspaper. Many would say the presentation of those core items is just as important. I mentioned in an earlier blog post the need for white space on the front page. The challenge: Knowing how much and where to have white space so that it doesn't create an awkward presentation. The result: When done effectively, white space creates an appealing newspaper presentation. I always think if someone walks by this front page at the gas station, will they be inclined to pick it up and look at it? Will they go so far as to purchase it? If so, then it passes the gas station test.
